I am an American born South Indian (sometimes self-described as an ABCD). I have nearly a decade of experience as a social worker, working with patients and clients of all ages and backgrounds. However, I can’t help but notice the missing population: my own kind. Where are the “desis” who need the support and help but fail to acquire it due to fear of stigma? It’s primarily this population that I seek to support and empower.
I’ve grown up in a close community where everyone knew everyone. We knew the ins and outs of all of our friends and yet, I somehow grew up oblivious to mental health issues because I was never exposed to them. Mental illness was not just covered up but actually ignored. It wasn’t a real problem because no one could recognize it.
I would like to help eradicate this taboo so that my children’s generation will be free and able to seek and attain successful mental health help.
