Bridging the Cultural Gap in South Asian Families

Bridging cultural expectations and modern realities can be challenging for South Asian families. In this workshop, Dr. Sudha Wadhwani explores the pressures facing today’s teens and young adults and offers practical strategies to strengthen communication, reduce stigma, and create a supportive, bi-cultural family environment where children can truly thrive.

  • July 29 @ 7:00 PM
  • Monmouth Junction

South Asian Mental Health Initiative and Network in collaboration with South Brunswick Public Library presents this workshop for the South Asian Families. Dr. Sudha Wadhwani will talk about the challenges among South Asian families in balancing traditional expectations with the complexities of raising children who are exposed to a broad range of societal pressures. As parents, we want our kids to thrive and succeed in all aspects of their lives… personally, socially, academically, and professionally. Dr. Wadhwani will share her experience in working with teens, young adults and college students, in order to assist parents in understanding the context of the current pressures our young people face and provide tools for bridging communication and creating a bi-cultural family system. She will provide strategies for raising our next generation to become confident, thriving adults, who are healthy and successful. Dr. Wadhwani will address topics of mental health stigma, managing the intergenerational cultural norms, and shifting to a strength-based approach to parenting. She will provide strategies for opening communication to meet your teen and young adult children where they are and creating a healthy relationship in which your teens and young adult children will feel more able to come to you when needed.
