DESCRIPTION:The South Asian Mental Health Initiative and Network (SAMHIN) is proud to once again collaborate with the Hindu Temple Society of America to bring mental health awareness and screenings to their annual health fair. The event will take place at the iconic and beautiful Hindu Temple\, also called Sri Maha Vallabha Ganapati Devasthanam or Ganesh Temple in the heart of Flushing\, New York. \nSAMHIN’s team of psychiatrists\, psychologists\, mental health counselors\, and social workers will offer confidential mental health screenings and be available to answer questions related to mental health\, as well as tobacco\, alcohol\, and substance use. Attendees will receive personalized guidance and referrals as needed\, with a strong commitment to privacy throughout the screening process. Free educational materials will also be provided. In addition\, free Nalaxone (Narcan) and information on its use will be available to help prevent opioid overdose deaths. \nIn addition to mental health services\, the health fair will offer a range of medical screenings\, including EKGs\, general checkups\, blood pressure and BMI assessments\, and blood tests such as cholesterol screening. \nThose coming for blood tests should be fasing for at least 6 hours prior to the blood test – NO coffee/tea\, mints or gum – ONLY water permitted.  \nJoin us if . . . \n\nIf you smoke or chew tobacco and want to learn about how this is harmful and advice on quitting. As parents\, we want our kids to thrive and succeed in all aspects of their lives… personally\, socially\, academically\, and professionally. Dr. Wadhwani will share her experience in working with teens\, young adults and college students\, in order to assist parents in understanding the context of the current pressures our young people face and provide tools for bridging communication and creating a bi-cultural family system. She will provide strategies for raising our next generation to become confident\, thriving adults\, who are healthy and successful. Dr. Wadhwani will address topics of mental health stigma\, managing the intergenerational cultural norms\, and shifting to a strength-based approach to parenting. Dr. Sudha Wadhwani will conduct this interactive workshop. This workshop for teens\, college students and young adults who are coming of age and trying to find a way to navigate both their family/cultural identity and the social world around them. It can be hard to balance two worlds that can feel so different and clash at times. Join us in connecting with your peers and learning strategies to feel more understood and opening conversation with your parents and families. We will discuss how to manage the expectations and pressures from both worlds\, as you determine your own identity… personally\, socially\, academically\, and professionally. SUMMARY:Mental Health Awareness at Nepalese-American Heritage Festival - Princeton\, New Jersey
DESCRIPTION:The South Asian Mental Health Initiative and Network (SAMHIN) is honored to be invited by the Nepalese community to promote mental health awareness at the Nepalese-American Heritage Festival and Buddha Jayanti celebration. The event will be held at the New Jersey Buddhist Vihara and Meditation Center in Princeton\, home to one of the largest Buddha statues in North America\, standing at 30 feet tall. The SAMHIN team will engage attendees in meaningful conversations about mental health\, working to reduce stigma and foster greater understanding of mental illness. Educational handouts will be made available to improve understanding of mental illness and available treatments.Other important activities at the festival will be Lakh Batti Ceremony\, Buddh’s Khat Ceremony\, Presidential Awards\, cultural performances and fun activities. There will be delicious Nepali food and art displays. SAMHIN Team will engage the guests and strive to increase mental health awareness and decrease stigma.

The event will take place at Burnt Mills Park\, Bedminster Township’s newest park in Bedminster\, NJ\, and will feature vibrant cultural programs\, live entertainment\, music\, and conclude with festive Holi color play. Holi colors will be provided for ticket holders\, and a variety of delicious food options will be available for purchase. \nThe SAMHIN team will be present to engage with the community and foster open conversations around mental health. DESCRIPTION:Shruthi Thiyagarajan\, Drashya Shah\, Shree Gogineni and Riddhi Jadhav\, medical students at Robert Wood Johnson Medicali School\, will discuss the importance of depression screening using easily available free screening tool\, Patient Health Questionnare\, (PHQ) and discuss its role in preventive care in children and adults. This workshop is a collaboration between Robert Wood Johnson Medical School\, SAMHIN and East Brunswick Public Library. \nThis workshop will recap their prior workshop on depression then discuss why early recognition is important\, and explain how primary care providers and individuals can use the PHQ-9 as a screening tool. The students will also talk about how the PHQ-9 can help connect individuals and families to appropriate resources and address common myths and stigma surrounding mental health. \n \n  \n
